“What is the deal with the teal pumpkin?”

Well readers, a teal pumpkin is a symbol for trick-or-treaters with food allergies letting them know that where ever they see one, they can receive a non-food treat.  The Teal Pumpkin Project was created by FARE (Food Allergy Resource & Education) in attempt to make Halloween a more inclusive holiday for all.  If you would like to read more about the Teal Pumpkin Project or add your house to the map, visit the link below.

Now, I know most kids look forward to the candy from trick-or-treating.  They want to come home and empty their sacks and start sorting their booty.  Well times have changed.  With food allergies and limitations in children’s diets on the rise, I too have jumped aboard the “Teal Pumpkin Project Train.”

I never really liked buying a metric “F” ton of candy, then risking having left-overs in the house.  The weeks following Halloween involving nightly binges on Reeses then hating myself for a total lack of self control.  If I buy temporary tattoos instead I don’t run the risk of impulsively covering my body in cute witches and ghosts.  Plus, Halloween candy can get pretty expensive (if you are buying the good stuff) and definitely won’t be good to hand out the next year.  When you buy non-food items to hand out, any remaining loot can be saved for the following year without risk of perishing.  Cha-ching money saving opportunity!

*Money Saving Tip: When the Halloween stuff goes on sale after the holiday stock up on non-food treats for next year.

Below I have put together a list of non-food items available on Amazon.  All of these would make excellent treats for passing out on Halloween, or even great classroom party favors.

1. Halloween Stamps; Includes: Bats, Ghosts, Pumpkins Pack of 24

These stamps are great for toddlers as well as older kids.  Who doesn’t love stamps?!  Well maybe the parents whose walls and furniture end up with stamps all over.  This set is perfect for classrooms or for adding to your trick-or-treat cauldron.

2. Boo Bunch Tattoos (6 DOZEN)

Temporary tattoos are fun for all ages. These tattoos are super cute and will wash away before the “After Halloween” clearance candy is gone.

3. WikkiStix Trick or Treat Pack

WikkiStix let children be creative by twisting, tracing, and bending these waxy sticks into different shapes.  They are also great for keeping in diaper bags or purses for those boring waits at the doctor or restaurants.

4. 100 Piece Halloween Bouncing Balls Set

Bouncy balls are definitely better for older kids as they may pose a choking hazard for the littler trick-or-treaters.  This 100 pack is easy on your wallet and can satisfy many trick-or-treaters.

5. Play-Doh Party Bag Dough (15 Count)

Play-Doh is a favorite for my two year old.  I think having a couple packs of these mixed in with your other non-candy goodies would be great for the smaller kids.  My almost 12 year old still loves playing with Play-Doh though, so maybe order a couple more for the older kids too.

6. Halloween Party Favor Mega Toy Novelty Assortment

An assortment of items is great for if you are throwing a Halloween party or bringing them to a classroom.  If you aren’t doing either, they can be mixed in with some of the other items in the post for a more diverse teal pumpkin.

7. Geddes Boo Buddies Pencil with Giant Eraser Assortment – Set of 36

These cute pencils with erasers would make a great treat from a teacher or as a classroom party favor.

8. 12 Pack Halloween Wind Up Toy Assortment

I love wind-up toys!  Buying a couple of these as classroom favors or for handing out would make you a fan favorite for sure!

9. 48 Pack Stretchy Skeleton 4 inches

These stretchy glittery skeletons are sooo much fun and would make a great party favor or addition to your non-candy treat-or-treat bowl.

10. 12 Assorted Bendable Zombie Theme Action Figures

These bendy zombies are awesome.  I can totally see my daughter using them to make her own stop-motion version of The Walking Dead.

I hope that I have encouraged you to jump aboard the Teal Pumpkin Train too.  There are a lot of wonderful treats to be given that don’t involve professional dental cleanings after.  Best of all, EVERYONE can participate in the fun Halloween tradition of Trick-or-Treating.
