Modo VS. Play-Doh
Hi there readers! This week’s post is about a side by side comparison of two types of play dough. Play-Doh and Modo (Modern Dough) by SmartLab Toys.
I recently was shopping for some birthday gifts for toddlers. Like most others I found myself at Target to do this shopping. While looking for “giftspiration” in the toy aisle I found myself in the Play dough section. Right there next to the very popular Play-Doh brand I saw something new and intriguing, Modo.
Modo, with its simple packaging and quality looking containers had me sold on it as a gift. I was inspired to do a comparison. The three pack set of Modo priced at $5.99 made it’s way into my cart as well as a similar set by Play-Doh priced at $5.49.
What you get…
Modo:
- 3 different bright colored play doughs (approximately 4 ounces each).
- High quality reusable, dishwasher safe, BPA and phthalate-free containers for each of the three doughs.
- 3 silicone bands with four different sides of stamps
- 1 wooden sculpting tool
Play-Doh:
- 3 different bright colors of Play-Doh (2 ounces each)
- 4 different stamps featuring numbers 1-9
- 1 plastic rolling pin
- 1 storage bucket
The Play Dough Comparison
Cost: With a similar price point on these two sets, I actually feel like the MODO is the “better bang for the buck”. The portions of the MODO are double the Play-Doh.
Features: I really like the features of the MODO set better. The reusable BPA and Phthalate-free containers are awesome and dishwasher safe, making them more environmentally friendly. My kids loved the fun stamps on the silicone bands that came with the MODO but the Play-Doh stamps were easier for my toddler to hold. Not only did my kids love the stamps but they also liked the wooden tool. I personally like the roller from the Play-Doh set.
Scent: Alright, so I do need to disclose that I HATE the smell of Play-doh. Some people love it and get all nostalgic over it, but to me it smells gross. MODO is fragrance-free which I really like.
Feel: To me, the way a play dough feels is the most important. I personally liked the way Modo felt compared to Play-Doh. It didn’t stick, leave a residue or crumble. Play-doh did all three of those things.
Quality: Following an afternoon of playing with the two different doughs, one appeared to be truly superior. Modo didn’t dry out or harden, it stayed soft and playable. In fact, we ended up throwing away the Play-Doh when we were done. The Modo however, went back into its containers and we were able to use several more times before it became dry and crumbly.
My Conclusion
So after trying out these two brands together we have found our favorite. Modo is the winner and will be my go-to/add-on item for birthday gifts and possibly even stocking stuffers. Yes, there is far fewer colors available and minimal accessories for the Modo. Play-Doh does have tons of colors, kits and different play sets. But overall I truly feel like Modo is the better buy.
I have only been able to find Modo at Target. There is currently not a way for me to link to the product because it isn’t even on Target’s website. This is actually my biggest issue with Modo, it’s lack of availability. Fortunately, I do most of my birthday and holiday shopping at Target so it is pretty easy for me to pick-up in store.
As always, thanks for reading!
