Easy Homemade Play Dough

Hi there readers!  Today I want to share with you not only an easy homemade play dough recipe, but also one of my favorite.  This play dough is ready in minutes and best of all, it uses ingredients that you probably already have.

Why is play dough so great?

Well, play dough makes a wonderful indoor or outdoor activity.  Not only is it tons of fun for youngsters but it also can be therapeutic.  Adding a some essential oils to this recipe will turn creative time to a nice relaxing activity.  I love sitting around a table with my two kids, one a toddler the other a tween, mashing and molding, rolling and stamping away.  Best reason of all, in my opinion is zero tech family fun time.

What makes homemade play dough better than store bought?

If you read my previous post about Play-Doh versus Modo you know that I have and do purchase store bought play dough on occasion.  You can read that article here. One of the major reasons (at least for me) is that I know exactly what is in the dough me and my kids are playing with.  Another reason homemade is better is cost.  The ingredients are inexpensive and common in most homes.  Honestly, this dough is softer, lasts longer when being played with and only takes minutes to make.

Easiest Homemade Play Dough Recipe

Yields 9 ounces of play dough (which I like to split into two; one to store and one to play with immediately)

INgredients

    • 1/2 cup flour
    • 1/2 cup water
    • 2 1/2 tbsp salt
    • 1 tsp cream of tartar
    • 1/2 tbsp canola/vegetable oil
    • food coloring (I like using the Watkins All Natural)
    • containers for storing (I find that these Ziplock containers work great)

 (Amazon product link HERE)

Directions

  1. In a saucepan combine all dry ingredients and mix well
  2. Add water, oil and food coloring
  3. Turn burner to medium/low
  4. Stir continuously until mixture starts to ball up and pulls away from the sides of the pan easily
  5. Turn off burner and transfer dough to cutting board or flat surface to cool
  6. Knead until smooth
  7. Play with immediately or store for later
  8. Store immediately after play (can last for months if stored in an airtight container)
